What is a home EV charger installation?

Signs it's time
Is your home ready for an EV charger?
An EV charger can place a significant new load on your home's electrical supply, so before we install one, we'll make sure your existing electrical system can safely support it. Before installation we'll assess things such as the following.
- Switchboard condition and available space
- Existing electrical demand
- Available supply capacity
- Cable route and distance to the charger
- Single-phase or three-phase supply
- Whether load management would be beneficial

Choosing your charger
Not sure which EV charger you need?
The right charger depends on your vehicle, how quickly you need to charge, your home's electrical capacity and how you use your car. We'll help you choose a solution that makes sense rather than simply installing the biggest charger available.
Already bought a charger? No problem. Send us the make and model and we can check whether it's suitable for your home before installation.

Your home may not need a bigger electrical supply
In some homes, load management allows the EV charger to automatically adjust its charging rate based on how much electricity the rest of the house is using.
This can allow us to install an effective home charging solution without unnecessarily upgrading your electrical supply.

Detail
EV chargers, load management and certification
An EV charger is one of the largest single loads most homes ever add, so it is wired as a dedicated circuit with its own protection rather than sharing an existing one. The installation is carried out to AS/NZS 3000, the wiring standard New Zealand electrical work is done to, and the size of the cable, the protection device and the isolation all follow from the charger’s rating and the distance it sits from your switchboard.
Where the supply is tight, load management is often the answer instead of a larger connection. The charger monitors what the rest of the house is drawing and reduces its own rate to stay within the available capacity, which frequently avoids an upgrade that would otherwise be needed.
All work is carried out by, or supervised by, Registered Electricians. Electrical Plus is led by Andrew Baker, a Registered Electrician with over 30 years of experience, registered with the Electrical Workers Registration Board. Every installation is completed with the appropriate Electrical Compliance Certificate and Record of Inspection, and backed by our Lifetime Workmanship Warranty.
Most home EV charger installations fall between $1,000 and $2,500. The cost depends on the charger, distance from your switchboard, cable route, electrical protection required and whether any switchboard work is needed. Send us a photo of your switchboard and the proposed charger location for an initial estimate.
A dedicated home EV charger is typically around 3 to 4 times faster than a standard household power point. Depending on your vehicle and charger, you can often add around 40 km of driving range per hour of charging, compared with around 10 km per hour from a standard power point.
Not always. As part of every installation, we'll assess your existing switchboard and electrical capacity. We'll only recommend an upgrade if it's genuinely required to safely support your EV charger.
We can supply and install a range of quality home EV chargers, or install a compatible charger you've already purchased. We'll help you choose the right option for your vehicle, home and budget.
In most cases, we can provide a fixed-price quotation on the same day as our site visit, often before we leave your property.
